Grooming by Coat Type: A Simple Home Routine
By DogHQ Life Editorial · Updated September 2, 2026
Double coats, curly coats, silky coats and short coats each need a different weekly rhythm.

Double coats
Brush with an undercoat rake weekly, more during seasonal coat blows. Do not shave a double coat without veterinary or professional advice.
Curly coats
Line-brush to the skin several times a week. Matting forms close to the skin long before it is visible.
Silky coats
Daily brushing or a shorter practical trim. Pay attention to behind the ears and under the legs.
Short coats
A weekly rubber curry brush removes a surprising amount of hair and keeps the coat healthy.
Everything else
Nails every 3–4 weeks, ears checked weekly, teeth brushed most days.
