Road Trips With Dogs: A Practical Checklist
By DogHQ Life Editorial · Updated September 2, 2026
Restraint, breaks, food timing and what to pack for a comfortable journey.

Restraint
A crash-tested crate or a properly fitted travel harness is safer than a loose dog. It also reduces distraction for the driver.
Break timing
Stop every two to three hours for a toilet break, water and a short sniff walk.
Food and water
Feed lightly before travel and offer water at every stop. Never leave a dog in a parked car in warm weather — this is dangerous even on mild days.
Pack list
Lead and spare lead, water and bowl, poo bags, towel, familiar bedding, food, and your veterinarian's contact details.
