Avoid

Can dogs eat chocolate?

Toxic to dogs. Darker chocolate is more dangerous.

Why

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which dogs metabolise slowly. Dark chocolate, cocoa powder and baking chocolate carry the highest concentration; milk chocolate is lower but still unsafe.

Preparation

Not applicable — chocolate should never be fed to dogs in any form.

Important warnings

If your dog eats chocolate, contact a vet or an animal poison line straight away with the type and amount eaten and your dog's weight. Do not wait for symptoms.
