Can dogs eat xylitol (birch sugar)?

Extremely dangerous to dogs, even in very small amounts.

Why

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol used in sugar-free gum, mints, some peanut butters, baked goods, supplements and toothpaste. In dogs it can trigger a rapid, severe drop in blood sugar and liver damage.

Preparation

Not applicable. Read labels on anything sweetened, especially peanut butter and 'sugar-free' products — it may appear as birch sugar or E967.

Important warnings

This is an emergency. Contact a vet immediately if your dog eats anything containing xylitol, even a tiny quantity.
