Use caution

Can dogs eat peanut butter?

Only if it is xylitol-free — and only in small amounts.

Why

Plain peanut butter with no added sweeteners is widely used in dog enrichment. The critical risk is xylitol (also labelled birch sugar or E967), a sweetener used in some 'no sugar' spreads that is extremely dangerous to dogs even in tiny amounts.

Portion guidance

Around half a teaspoon for a small dog and up to a tablespoon for a large dog, occasionally — it is very calorie-dense.

Preparation

Read the full ingredient list every time you buy, including repeat purchases, since recipes change. Choose plain peanut butter with no added salt, sugar, sweeteners or chocolate.

Important warnings

Xylitol is life-threatening to dogs. If your dog eats anything containing it, contact a vet immediately. Peanut butter is also high in fat, so avoid it for dogs prone to pancreatitis.
