Can dogs eat pumpkin?
Plain cooked pumpkin is well tolerated and easy to mix into food.
Why
Plain pumpkin is soft, mild and high in soluble fibre, which is why so many homemade dog treats use it. It must be plain — pie filling contains sugar and spices that do not belong in a dog's diet.
Portion guidance
A teaspoon for a small dog up to a tablespoon or two for a large dog, mixed into food.
Preparation
Use plain cooked or plain tinned pumpkin purée with no added sugar, salt or spices. Roast fresh pumpkin without seasoning and remove skin and seeds.
Important warnings
Never use spiced pumpkin pie filling — nutmeg and added sweeteners are not appropriate. Sudden large amounts of fibre can upset digestion.
