Can dogs eat rice?

Plain cooked rice is bland and easy on most dogs' digestion.

Why

Plain white or brown rice, cooked with water only, is a simple carbohydrate many dogs tolerate well. It is filling but not nutritionally complete on its own.

Portion guidance

A tablespoon or two mixed into a meal for a small dog, scaling up with size — not as a meal replacement.

Preparation

Boil in plain water. No salt, butter, oil, stock or seasoning.

Important warnings

Rice is carbohydrate-dense; keep portions modest for dogs managing weight. Do not use rice as a long-term substitute for a complete diet.
