Can dogs eat sweet potato?

Cooked and plain, it makes an excellent chewy homemade treat.

Why

Cooked sweet potato is soft, fibrous and popular with dogs. Sliced and dehydrated, it becomes a chewy plant-based alternative to animal chews.

Portion guidance

A small cube or two for a small dog, a few for a large dog.

Preparation

Always cook it — raw sweet potato is hard to digest. Bake, steam or boil plain with no butter, oil, salt or spices, and remove the skin if your dog gulps.

Important warnings

High in carbohydrate, so keep it occasional for weight-managed dogs. Never serve with typical human seasonings.
