Can dogs eat onions?

Damages red blood cells — raw, cooked, dried or powdered.

Why

Onions belong to the allium family and can damage a dog's red blood cells, leading to anaemia. Cooking does not remove the risk, and onion powder in gravies, stocks and seasoned meats is a common hidden source.

Preparation

Not applicable — keep onion out of anything your dog eats.

Important warnings

Watch for onion or onion powder in leftovers, stock cubes and seasoned takeaway meat. Contact a vet if your dog eats a meaningful amount.
