Building a Daily Routine Your Dog Can Rely On

By DogHQ Life Editorial · Updated September 2, 2026

A simple structure of activity, enrichment and rest that prevents most everyday problems.

Most dogs need more rest than they get

Adult dogs sleep a great deal. A dog who never fully switches off often looks "hyperactive" when they are simply overtired.

A workable daily shape

  • Morning: toilet, walk with sniffing time
  • Midday: short training or a food puzzle, then rest
  • Afternoon: main activity block
  • Evening: calm walk, chew, settle

Enrichment beats distance

Twenty minutes of sniffing, searching or problem-solving tires most dogs more than an extra kilometre of pavement walking.
