How to Choose a Dog Bed That Actually Gets Used

By DogHQ Life Editorial · Updated September 2, 2026

Size, fill, sleeping style and washability — the four things that decide whether a bed works.

Watch how your dog sleeps

Sprawlers need a flat mattress with room to stretch. Curlers do better with bolsters. Diggers and nesters need durable covers they can push around.

Size

Measure your dog nose-to-tail while lying down and add roughly 15–20 cm. Most beds sold as "large" are smaller than owners expect.

Fill

Solid foam holds shape far better than loose stuffing for heavier or older dogs. Loose fill flattens quickly under 30 kg dogs.

Washability

A removable, machine-washable cover is the difference between a bed that lasts and one that gets thrown out.
