Safe

Can dogs eat apples?

Crunchy and refreshing — with the core and pips removed.

Why

Apple flesh and skin are safe for dogs and provide fibre with few calories. The seeds contain a compound that releases cyanide when crushed, which is why the core is always removed.

Portion guidance

A few slices, sized to your dog. One or two pieces is plenty for a small dog.

Preparation

Wash, remove the core and all pips, then slice into manageable pieces. Frozen apple slices work well in warm weather.

Important warnings

Never let a dog chew the core. Whole apples are a choking hazard for enthusiastic swallowers.
